President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the Supreme Court to revisit the birthright citizenship case. He responded to reports about billboards advertising birth plans at U.S. hospitals targeting potential immigrants from Mexico.
In a Truth Social post, Trump highlighted the presence of signs and billboards near the U.S.-Mexico border. These ads reportedly offer delivery services starting at $4,000. Trump criticized the situation, saying, “Billions of Dollars will be illegally made by this SCAM, with Citizenship going to anyone willing to pay.” He pressed the Supreme Court to reconsider the birthright citizenship case, which the court recently rejected. Trump had attempted to change the birthright provision in the 14th Amendment through an executive order. He expressed his concern, stating, “This miscarriage of justice will destroy America if they don’t change their absolutely insane decision.”
The alleged scam involved advertising from Mission Regional Medical Center (MRMC) in South Texas. Governor Greg Abbott mentioned on Tuesday that these ads targeted illegal immigrants, offering birth packages to allow entry into the U.S. for childbirth, granting American citizenship to the newborns. Newsweek contacted Mission Regional Medical Center, the White House, and the U.S. Department of Justice for further comments.
Birth Package Billboards: Key Details
On Tuesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott requested the state’s Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to investigate MRMC. The hospital allegedly targeted foreign nationals through advertisements in Mexico. Abbott accused MRMC of benefiting from what he termed ‘birth tourism’.
According to Fox News, the campaign advertised deliveries starting at $3,950 for a natural birth, while C-sections began at $5,525. Abbott released a statement criticizing birth tourism as an illegal practice. He insisted it exploits the hospitality the U.S. and Texas extend to foreign travelers annually. Abbott noted that thousands enter the U.S. under false pretenses to secure citizenship for their children. He called for an investigation into MRMC, regulated by HHSC, for potential state law and contract violations.
MRMC confirmed its involvement in the advertising campaign to Fox News but clarified it does not support or facilitate unlawful activities. Trump reiterated his stance in a recent post, asserting that American citizenship is not for sale and condemning the practice as illegal.
Recently, several Republicans in Congress have raised concerns about birth tourism, labeling it a significant issue for the U.S. Representative Andy Ogles, a GOP member from Tennessee, has introduced legislation. This proposed law seeks to restrict entry for pregnant immigrants and visitors who lack ties to U.S. citizens.
