Trump Nominates Lance Schroyer as New ICE Director

President Donald Trump announced the nomination of Lance Schroyer as the new director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Schroyer is a former Oklahoma state trooper and U.S. Marine. Trump praised Schroyer as a ‘patriot with real operational experience’ and called him a ‘proven leader with decades of experience locking up the worst of the worst.’

Schroyer’s nomination aligns him with new Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, also from Oklahoma. Mullin recently introduced Schroyer at a National Sheriffs’ Association event, highlighting his 29-year career and collaboration on immigration enforcement programs. Mullin expressed confidence in Schroyer’s leadership, expecting it to empower ICE to deport criminal illegal aliens and secure the homeland.

If confirmed, Schroyer will lead ICE amid a national backlash against Trump’s immigration enforcement strategies. The agency has faced public disapproval due to aggressive crackdowns that increased tensions and resulted in fatal clashes earlier in the year. Trump supports large-scale deportations, with ICE central to these operations.

ICE has expanded significantly with a $75 billion funding boost, adding 12,000 officers and increasing detention capacity. Despite Mullin’s softer rhetoric on immigration, his alignment with Trump’s priorities suggests continuity in ICE policy.

Claire Trickler-McNulty, a former senior ICE official, remarked that prior ICE directors often had legal backgrounds. Schroyer’s nomination may be influenced by Mullin’s preference, given his Oklahoma ties. John Torres, another ICE official, noted Schroyer might benefit from his state and local experience during Senate confirmation, lacking federal-level controversies.

Schroyer was nominated following Todd Lyons’ resignation in May. David Venturella, a former executive at a private prison company, is currently the acting head and will remain in this role pending Senate approval of Schroyer.

ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed director since the Obama administration, reflecting the contentious politics surrounding the agency.
