Trump Intervenes in Balogun’s World Cup Red Card Controversy

President Donald Trump stepped into the controversy surrounding USMNT striker Folarin Balogun’s red card during the World Cup. A source confirmed that Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the decision made in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The specifics of Trump’s conversation with Infantino, whom he has referred to as a ‘friend and great leader in sports,’ remain unclear. However, Balogun, who scored three goals in this World Cup prior to receiving the red card, is now cleared to continue playing.

According to The Athletic, FIFA’s disciplinary code allows for a judicial body to suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure. The code explains, ‘If the person benefiting from a suspended sanction commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked by the judicial body and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.’

In an unexpected turn, FIFA confirmed that Balogun’s suspension is in place for a probationary period of one year. U.S. Soccer expressed relief, stating, ‘We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow. Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.’

Belgium, which narrowly defeated Senegal in the Round of 32, expressed their surprise at FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to play. The Royal Belgian Football Association stated their intent to explore all possible options to contest this decision.

Team USA manager Mauricio Pochettino and his staff had prepared for Balogun’s absence, but his eligibility means they can field their regular starting lineup against Belgium. Meanwhile, Trump and Infantino are expected to be present at New York/New Jersey Stadium for the World Cup Final on July 19. There, as previously, Trump will award the World Cup trophy to the winning team’s captain on the field.

Winning against Belgium on Monday would mark only the second time the USMNT reached the World Cup quarterfinals. If successful, they would face the winner between Portugal and Spain.
