Trump Endorses Bailey for Governor Amid Illinois Political Tensions

Former President Donald Trump has reiterated his endorsement of Darren Bailey for governor of Illinois. This endorsement challenges Bailey’s efforts to distance himself from Trump, whose support impacted Bailey’s defeat to Democrat JB Pritzker in the 2022 election.

Trump announced his backing during his visit to Ireland, having attended the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament at his resort. He acknowledged Bailey’s tragic loss in a helicopter crash in Montana last October. The crash claimed the lives of Bailey’s son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren.

Trump had previously endorsed Bailey for the GOP primary in 2022, which ultimately led to Bailey’s significant loss to Pritzker. Trump criticized Pritzker, who is also a prominent opponent of the former president, calling him a “disaster as a governor,” highlighting issues such as crime. He suggested Bailey is a strong candidate despite his personal tragedy.

Bailey, who is making another bid for governor, aims to prioritize state issues over ties with Trump. He has focused on appealing to suburban voters, a demographic increasingly leaning Democratic due to Trump’s unpopularity.

“Donald Trump has nothing to do with me running for governor,” Bailey stated, distancing himself from Trump’s influence while acknowledging the former president’s past endorsements.

Despite Bailey’s efforts to detach his campaign from Trump, Bailey attended a convention dubbed “Trumpapalooza” by Trump’s supporters, and was seen in VIP seating there. This has intensified the focus on his relationship with Trump.

Pritzker has capitalized on Bailey’s previous support for Trump, running TV ads to emphasize Bailey’s past statements praising the former president. Leah Hurwitz, Pritzker’s campaign spokeswoman, commented on Bailey’s continued admiration for Trump, referencing policies that Bailey supports.

Trump is scheduled for a visit to Illinois later in the month, attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament. Whether he will campaign for Bailey during this visit remains uncertain.
