President Donald Trump continues his influence in Republican politics, as Rep. Barry Moore wins the Republican Senate runoff election in Alabama. Moore, the candidate Trump endorsed, secured the GOP nomination, defeating Jared Hudson, a former Navy SEAL sniper. According to the Associated Press, Moore and Hudson were the top contenders in the previous Republican primary, where neither managed to capture over half of the votes, leading them to a runoff.
Barry Moore, recognized for his salute at the 2025 Republican National Convention, is actively campaigning for the U.S. Senate in 2026. He aims to succeed Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is pursuing the Alabama gubernatorial seat instead of re-election to the Senate. Moore’s political journey includes founding a waste hauling enterprise and subsequently serving as a state lawmaker, followed by his election to the U.S. House in 2020. He was among the initial politicians to support Trump during his 2015 presidential bid.
Moore, hailing from Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, aligns with the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, demonstrating his staunch political stance. His campaign gains further backing from Vice President JD Vance and Senate Majority Leader Sen. John Thune, positioning him as the viable candidate in the race to replace Sen. Tuberville.

Jared Hudson also sought the Senate position in Alabama. Hudson, distinguished as a combat veteran, has served as a sheriff’s deputy, firefighter, and small business owner. His current role includes leading a nonprofit organization aimed at equipping law enforcement to combat human trafficking. Despite his notable endorsements from figures like former Sen. Markwayne Mullin, now Trump’s Homeland Security secretary, Sen. Tim Sheehy, and conservative media personality Riley Gaines, Hudson was unable to outmatch Moore.
Heading towards the November election, Moore will compete with either Dakarai Larriett, a petcare business operator, or Everett Wess, an attorney and former judge.
