Trump Announces ‘Historic Agreement’ for Gaza Disarmament

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that his newly established “Board of Peace” secured an agreement for the disarmament of Hamas and other armed factions in the Gaza Strip. Trump called this a “HISTORIC agreement,” framing it as a significant win for regional peace and a milestone in his administration’s 20-Point Plan for the region.

The deal’s confirmation by Hamas remains pending. Political expert Rajan Menon expressed skepticism over Trump’s declaration. Menon noted that Hamas has not agreed to disarm under current ceasefire terms without an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Even then, Hamas intends to surrender arms to a non-Hamas government entity.

According to Trump, the agreement establishes a new Palestinian government primarily focused on governance, ensuring Gaza is no longer used for attacks on Israel. Trump asserted, “Israel will have security with Gaza no longer serving as a terror base.” Israeli forces would pull out from Gaza as disarmament progresses, with security being handed over to an International Stabilization Force and a new Palestinian police force.

For the past week, Hamas leaders have been in Cairo negotiating with mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. Following the dissolution of its governing body that had ruled Gaza, Hamas reported progress in these discussions. Trump thanked Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their mediation, commending his administration for their work.

“One year ago, the region suffered war, a humanitarian crisis, and hostages in captivity,” said Trump. “We have made historic strides; although much remains to be done.”

Despite the praise, Israel often violated ceasefire terms, with more than 1,200 Palestinian deaths reported since the Gaza ceasefire last October, according to Gaza health officials. Trump’s milestone announcement leaves questions about the timeline and enforcement, yet it marks a major diplomatic effort for the new Board of Peace.

The Board of Peace (BoP) is an entity initiated by Trump to oversee transition, security, and economic recovery in post-conflict Gaza. Chaired by Trump, it includes prominent figures such as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair. The BoP supervises the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) and coordinates international funding and security deployments.

Trump’s 20-Point Plan

Trump’s “Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict,” known as the 20-Point Plan, was unveiled in September 2025. Developed by diplomatic advisors, it aims to achieve ceasefire, hostage releases, militant disarmament, and establish international oversight.

Phase One (Late 2025): Focused on initial humanitarian and security goals, such as freezing conflict lines, freeing hostages, and enhancing aid.

Phase Two (2026): Includes governance and security changes like:

• Launch of the Board of Peace under UN backing to oversee administration and security.
• Formation of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza to manage services.
• Deployment plans for an International Stabilization Force working with local police.
