Recent court documents reveal concerning interactions between the Trump administration and Iranian officials regarding Iranian asylum seekers in the U.S. The details emerged in a federal lawsuit, presenting evidence of secretive information exchange about those detained in immigration centers.
According to these filings, Iranian officials were granted unusual access to dossiers on Iranian detainees held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the months preceding military tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
A sworn statement indicates that a specific goal was to deport all Iranian detainees.
From September 2025 to January 2026, over 100 Iranians were reportedly deported to Tehran. This occurred shortly before the U.S. initiated military action against Iran in February.
The lawsuit, filed by the Iranian American Legal Defense Fund, claims that confidential information was illegally shared, potentially threatening those deported with persecution in Iran.
Cyrus Mehri, a lawyer involved, recounted his interactions with an unnamed Iranian official. Despite Mr. Mehri’s previous meetings and acknowledgment of opposing positions, the official shared views on the deportation discussions.
The State Department has yet to comment on these revelations. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has denied the claims made in the lawsuit.
