White House official Lindsey Halligan criticized content at the National Museum of American History’s Entertainment Nation exhibit through an exclusive email to Fox News Digital. This exhibit, which examines American pop culture, has faced criticism both internally and externally for its perceived politically charged interpretation of cultural milestones.

The exhibit includes striking examples such as a C-3PO and R2-D2 display with a panel stating that Star Wars inspired America during post-Vietnam uncertainty. Additionally, placards like one accompanying a 1923 circus poster suggest that circuses expressed colonial impulses.

The exhibit further interprets iconic American characters through a critical lens. A description of The Lone Ranger suggests the title character’s relationship with Tonto mirrored the U.S. government’s outlook as the world’s Lone Ranger.

Mickey Mouse is also examined critically. The display for the 1928 cartoon Steamboat Willie suggests Mickey challenged authority, while noting his character’s features related to traditions of blackface minstrelsy.

The Indiana Jones panel reads that his character embodied confident righteousness reminiscent of the 1980s, referencing Ronald Reagan’s famous speech, “Are you better off?”

Further examples include a display calling Magnum P.I. a challenge to perceptions of Vietnam veterans, and a section on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show referring to it as a platform for viewers distrustful of politicians.

Halligan stated these examples are part of what the Trump Administration intends to address. She argued that framing American culture as violent or imperialist does not reflect the greatness of the nation nor its progress.
