In a tragic incident on Wednesday night, a police helicopter responding to an active shooter situation in Flagstaff, Arizona, crashed, resulting in the loss of both the pilot and a trooper-paramedic on board. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) confirmed that the Ranger helicopter was providing tactical air support to assist the Flagstaff Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies.
Sgt. Kameron Lee, a spokesperson for AZDPS, revealed that the helicopter went down while aiding officers on the ground. Before the crash occurred, these officers had engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect.

On the ground, the suspect, who was wounded during the exchange, was successfully taken into custody. As of now, authorities have not disclosed the identities of the suspect or those of the helicopter crew.
AZDPS has committed to investigating both the shooting incident and the helicopter crash, which occurred in Flagstaff on February 4, 2026. Their Major Incident Division will spearhead the probe into the officer-involved shooting. Concurrently, the agency will collaborate with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash.
No further injuries were reported at the site of the shooting, and additional details remain scarce for the time being as investigations continue.
