In recent developments, President Donald Trump criticized Canada following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to reject a U.S.-Canada trade proposal. Carney also promised a dollar-for-dollar response to the newly imposed American tariffs.
Trump, addressing the situation for the first time since talks fell apart, took to Truth Social and stated, “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one.” He further accused, “They have also charged our great farmers, for years, massive amounts of tariffs. No more!”
The new U.S. tariffs involve a 50% increase on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Carney labeled these measures an economic “attack” on Canada, assuring that retaliatory tariffs would be implemented next month.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has used tariffs as leverage in trade negotiations, particularly targeting Canada. The trade discussions between Ottawa and Washington ended unsuccessfully last Friday. Carney described last-minute changes in the U.S. proposal as “unfair, uneconomic, and questioned the reliability of any deal.”
