Martin Dean inspected the damage to his car in the parking lot, using a flashlight to look through the broken window. Around him lay scattered debris from an apartment building. Hours earlier, a tornado had torn through Merrillville, a town in northwest Indiana. The area was among several affected by tornadoes outside Chicago during a two-day period of severe weather in the Midwest.
Meteorologist Kevin Doom from the National Weather Service in Chicago noted the path of destruction in Merrillville as likely evidence of a tornado’s presence. Surveys were planned to assess the damage and tornado strength. Damage was reported to extend west toward St. John and northeast toward Hobart. Further updates on tornado impacts in Illinois and northwestern Indiana were expected later.
Other areas, including Streator and Dwight in north-central Illinois, as well as parts of southern Lake County, Indiana, also experienced potential tornadoes. Following a series of storms, clear skies were forecasted for Friday, allowing residents to survey the damage.
On Wednesday alone, officials documented over a dozen tornado sightings in Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Illinois. The storms caused power outages affecting hundreds of thousands and led to numerous flight disruptions at Chicago airports. Thursday brought renewed storm activity, with alerts for multiple weather hazards issued through the evening. The Chicago White Sox game and a Mumford & Sons concert faced cancellations and delays.
Dean, a Chicago resident working in Merrillville, described receiving an alert about the approaching storm. As he stayed at a friend’s apartment, he witnessed the tornado’s fury. At night, Dean surveyed the damage—vehicles and debris were everywhere, and power was still out. Despite the turmoil, he expressed relief at the lack of injuries among people.
Maria Williams, another resident, found her home in disarray. The storm had ripped a tree from the ground and left her roof stripped. Her long-time home was severely impacted, leaving her emotional as she contemplated rebuilding. Her daughter, Kari, recounted their frightening experience during the storm, seeking refuge with a neighbor after their home was damaged.
Williams, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, rushed home after her daughter’s call, not realizing the extent of the destruction until the morning light revealed the true damage.
