Tom Selleck Discusses the End of ‘Blue Bloods’

Tom Selleck recently shared his thoughts on the conclusion of “Blue Bloods.” Despite the show ranking high in broadcast ratings, the cast faced challenges to keep it running. On Ted Danson’s podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Selleck mentioned the cast willingly took a 25% pay cut. This decision aimed to sustain the show, which had reached its 15th season with 293 episodes.

“Blue Bloods” was different from many other television projects. Selleck highlighted the absence of ego clashes among the cast. He emphasized setting an example due to his role as the family patriarch on the show.

As the show approached its final episodes, Selleck noted, “At our last family dinner, everybody wanted to come back.” The collective commitment persisted despite salary reductions and other adjustments. Notably, in its 15th year, “Blue Bloods” maintained a strong position, ranking sixth among broadcast shows.

The 81-year-old actor added, “Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was going to stay on.” Selleck acknowledged the unique challenge of maintaining an intact cast for such an extended period.

Reflecting on the series’ conclusion, Selleck told TV Insider about his feelings of frustration. He considered the show “wildly successful” even as it ended. He remarked, “You can program [the show] in the worst time slot, and it will still win Friday nights.” However, Selleck acknowledged that it might take time to process the series’ end.

There are no plans for Selleck to reprise his role on Donnie Wahlberg’s potential spin-off, “Boston Blue.” In his words, “It’s partly my lot to make sure ‘Blue Bloods’ has its place in television history.” But continuing as Frank Reagan might not be in his future plans.
