Tom Selleck recently shared insights about one of his most acclaimed roles, Thomas Magnum in ‘Magnum, P.I.’ In a discussion with Ted Danson on the podcast ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name,’ Selleck revealed how a chat with actor James Garner influenced his decision to accept the part.
Selleck was initially hesitant about the ‘Magnum, P.I.’ script. He explained to Danson that he had a contract with a studio and was feeling pressured to take on the show, though he disliked the original concept. ‘Magnum,’ he said, had no flaws and unrealistic aspects, which displeased him.
You don’t have much power, but if they want you, you’ll never have more power than you do right now. That’s all I’m gonna say.— James Garner advised Selleck.
Selleck credited Garner with helping him avoid a version of ‘Magnum’ that did not align with what he wanted. He previously described the script as ‘very James Bond-like’ when speaking with AARP in 2015. Garner’s role as Jim Rockford in ‘The Rockford Files’ served as inspiration, leading Selleck to prefer a more grounded character.
The actor’s persistence paid off when he challenged the network’s direction. He fought hard for a character with more depth and vulnerability. This resulted in the script being revamped by co-creator Donald P. Bellisario into what Selleck later described as ‘the best TV movie I had ever read,’ retaining the show’s name ‘Magnum, P.I.’
In an earlier interview with Charlie Rose, Selleck reminisced about the high stakes involved, saying, ‘I bet the farm’ by pushing for script changes. He refused to compromise on his vision, which ultimately shaped the show’s success.
While he faced industry skepticism, having completed six unsuccessful pilots previously, Selleck was determined. He admitted to Danson that taking the role was a risk, but a necessary one, expressing gratitude for the opportunity it presented.
Selleck also mentioned his dislike for attaching ‘P.I.’ to the title, due to personal connotations he experienced while living in Hawaii at the time. Nonetheless, the role in ‘Magnum, P.I.’ became a defining moment in his career.
