The Tennessee Titans faced unsettling news regarding linebacker Cedric Gray. The team disclosed that Gray has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol as a result of a UTV accident over the recent weekend.
“Over the weekend, Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident in Tennessee and sustained a concussion and minor injuries,” the Titans stated. “We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol.”
The Titans are set to start the season this Sunday against the New York Jets, Robert Saleh’s former team. Gray’s entry into concussion protocol so close to the season opener likely rules him out for Week 1. Players need to pass multiple stages of the NFL’s return-to-play procedure before they are cleared.
Gray was drafted in the fourth round in 2024 and is now in his third year with the Titans. Last season was significant for Gray as he amassed 164 total tackles, ranking fourth in the league. His stats included seven tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and a sack over 16 games. Pro Football Focus (PFF) awarded him an overall grade of 78.9, positioning him as the seventh-highest among 88 qualified linebackers. His run defense grade of 92.7 stood as the second-highest.
Gray’s preseason performance indicated his potential trajectory toward a Pro Bowl-caliber year. With Gray sidelined, the Titans will depend on veteran Cody Barton, third-year player James Williams Sr., and rookie Anthony Hill Jr. to step up and compensate for his absence.
