California Governor Gavin Newsom claims that President Donald Trump’s Justice Department initiated a politically driven investigation against him. However, recent reports cast doubt on this assertion, suggesting that key investigations began before Trump’s second term.
Investigation Timeframes
The timing of the investigations is crucial. While Newsom argues that the current Justice Department is using the investigations as a political tool, multiple sources indicate that some activities started before Trump’s return to office. According to CalMatters, at least two criminal investigations involving people close to Newsom have been ongoing for about a year in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.
The outlet, citing a Justice Department insider, says these investigations originated from whistleblowers and local complaints in Sacramento. Additionally, one inquiry involving former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson was initiated during President Biden’s administration.
Claims of Politicization
Despite the reported timelines, Newsom insists that the current Justice Department has politicized the investigations. He describes these actions as a politically motivated “fishing expedition” in retaliation for his criticisms of Trump.
Newsom’s administration has attempted to use the Freedom of Information Act to uncover who authorized the current probes. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche recently challenged Newsom’s statements, noting no evidence supports the claims of political motivation.
Social Media and Public Reactions
Newsom’s office responded to Blanche’s remarks by mocking him on social media. A meme labeled “Why you always lyin'” was shared, and the governor’s press office commented on the situation.
Focused Investigations
According to CalMatters, federal prosecutors have expanded their inquiries after not making headway with the Williamson investigation. This increased scrutiny includes examining Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the family’s finances, and their associates. Investigators have looked into tax filings, nonprofit organizations, and specific behested payments, although no unlawful behavior has been alleged regarding those payments.
Fox News Digital reports that federal inquiries concerning Jennifer Siebel Newsom exist, although no investigation directly targets Governor Newsom himself.
The Department of Justice, the White House, and Newsom’s office have not immediately answered requests for comment.
