Thieves Steal Renoir Paintings from French Museum

2 weeks ago 0

Authorities in France are investigating a theft at a museum featuring artworks by renowned French impressionist Auguste Renoir. Early Tuesday, two individuals broke into the museum and took four paintings. As they fled, they dropped one painting, according to Bryan Masson, mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera.

The town’s video surveillance cameras captured the suspects, who managed to escape with three paintings. The estimated value of the stolen art is 9 million euros, roughly equivalent to $10 million. It remains uncertain if this estimate includes all four paintings initially stolen or just the three still missing.

Masson shared that the museum’s alarm was triggered at 5:48 a.m., and police arrived at the scene within five minutes. A police officer was later seen standing in front of the Musee Renoir entrance after the theft.

He stated on Facebook that both municipal and national police have been deployed to the site. The search for the perpetrators is underway, and the investigation continues actively.

“Attacking the Renoir Museum is attacking a part of the history and heritage of Cagnes-sur-Mer,” Masson remarked. “These events underscore the urgent need to implement a comprehensive plan to secure our museums and protect our artworks. I am committed to dedicating all necessary resources to safeguard this heritage, which belongs to the residents of Cagnes.”
