The Intriguing Life of Sue Lowther-Pinkerton

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton recognized that his mother had led a remarkable life, though she rarely spoke of certain chapters in it. Sue Lowther-Pinkerton ventured into British intelligence after World War II, serving in MI5 during the Cold War. Despite her intriguing past, she scarcely shared details with her children.

It was during a documentary viewing decades ago that Sue let slip a fragment of her past. As the film covered the “Cambridge spy ring,” Soviet agents in the UK, the name Sir Roger Hollis, director general of MI5 from 1956 to 1965, emerged. He was a figure accused of secretly working for the Soviet Union, allegations investigated but never validated. Sue abruptly commented during that viewing, “Absolute nonsense. He was a total gentleman and a patriot.”

Such comments stirred curiosity, yet she held firm, never revealing more about her time in intelligence.

“My mother, without missing a knitting stitch, said, ‘Absolute nonsense. He was a total gentleman and a patriot.’”

Jamie learned about his mother’s career in intelligence only in his mid-20s. Inspired by her concealed history, Jamie authored “Beyond the Edge of Light,” an intriguing wartime love story. In his novel, the character Missie resonates with Sue, who passed at the age of 99 in 2023.

Before joining MI5, Sue lived a life marked by adventure. She served tea and meals to World War II troops through the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) before reaching enlistment age. Sue entered the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) in 1942, a branch dedicated to women in the British Army, eventually driving gun limbers in hazardous conditions that earned her extra pay.

Her work transitioned into a more confidential realm post-war. Jamie disclosed, “She went into secret service, joining MI5, akin to a blend of the FBI and CIA, during the Cold War.” Sue’s engagement in intelligence began even earlier, working with Army intelligence in Singapore post-military, trusted with delicate communications regarding HMS Amethyst’s significant departure from China’s Yangtze River in 1949.

After rejoining Britain in 1951, Sue worked at Leconfield House with MI5, though details remained scarce, even with her son Jamie, who later served in the SAS and Irish Guards.

Sue’s enigmatic life didn’t deter her from being committed to her family. Jamie shared anecdotes of her managing household challenges with humor and calmness, traits that helped her maintain a balanced family life alongside her spouse, Anthony Hull Lowther-Pinkerton.

Her life influenced not only her son but also the royal figures he advised. Jamie guided Prince William and Prince Harry into their military careers, serving as a private secretary and mentor from 2005 to 2013. His relationship with the royals extended as he was named godfather to Prince George, influenced by the strong personalities, like his mother, in his life.
