In McKinney, Texas, a significant legal development unfolded as a judge considered granting Karmelo Anthony a new trial. Anthony, a Texas teenager, faced a murder conviction earlier this summer for the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old athlete. The incident occurred during a high school track meet.
On Wednesday, a major change in the case occurred when the presiding judge was removed. Judge Michael Chitty was appointed to review the motion by Anthony’s attorneys who requested a retrial. Anthony, now 19 years old, received a 35-year prison sentence. During Wednesday’s hearing, he appeared in a green prison jumpsuit alongside his parents and Metcalf’s family members.
Anthony’s legal team challenged the involvement of state District Judge John Roach, citing a television interview where Roach asserted the jury’s verdict was appropriate. The attorneys claimed the June proceedings featured stringent courtroom protocols and improper jury instructions. They also contended Anthony’s choice not to testify was influenced by a dispute with prosecutors focusing on events preceding the stabbing.
The jury had dismissed Anthony’s self-defense claims during the confrontation with Metcalf in the bleachers. Witnesses described a heated argument over Anthony’s refusal to vacate a tent belonging to Metcalf’s team on a rainy day. The case escalated into national discourse, partly due to social media framing it in racial terms. Anthony is Black, while Metcalf was white. Nonetheless, lawyers from both sides maintained the incident was not related to race.
During the recusal hearing, Anthony’s attorneys highlighted Judge Roach’s post-trial remarks to a Dallas TV station. In the segment, Roach confirmed that he believed the jury’s verdict was correct and defended his courtroom regulations amidst intensifying public attention.
The incident occurred while multiple schools competed at the track event. Witnesses testified that Anthony sat under the Memorial High School tent, leading to repeated demands from Metcalf and others for him to leave. This tension culminated in a confrontation where witnesses saw Anthony as the instigator.
According to the police report, Anthony allegedly reached into a bag and warned, “Touch me and see what happens.” Following Metcalf’s push, witnesses reported Anthony drew a knife and fatally stabbed Metcalf in the chest.
