Terri Bresnahan’s New Role as Superintendent at Oak Park District 97

As the new academic year approaches, Terri Bresnahan is already in the midst of preparations, ensuring everything is set for the first school day on August 26. Her responsibilities include making sure teachers and students have the necessary resources, summer projects are finished, and school buildings are ready.

Bresnahan began her 31st year in public education by taking on the role of superintendent at Oak Park Elementary School District 97. Her contract, approved in February, started on July 1. She brings a wealth of experience from her 11 years as superintendent at Berkeley School District 87, focusing on equity in Oak Park, a village she regards as committed to this cause.

“Being in a community like Oak Park, which is dedicated to providing opportunities to all students, is crucial,” Bresnahan stated. School Board President Cheree Moore praised Bresnahan’s integrity and commitment to equity, noting confidence in her leadership capabilities to advance District 97.

Bresnahan highlighted Oak Park’s strong community values toward education and its inclusive efforts. She remarked, “This community’s dedication to ensuring access and collaboration attracted me to pursue my leadership here.” Amid national political scrutiny on public education, finding alignment in values led her to Oak Park.

“The board had a clear framework to evaluate candidates, and Dr. Bresnahan consistently displayed the qualities our community sought,” Moore expressed. Bresnahan’s passion for education is rooted in personal experiences from her childhood. Her single mother worked various jobs, ensuring access to necessities, some provided through school programs, like free lunches.

“These experiences inspired my career choice, allowing me to repay and create opportunities for future generations,” Bresnahan shared. She is also focused on strengthening school culture, which includes introducing “responsive classrooms” to support positive behavior management.

As Bresnahan settles into her role, she aims to understand district dynamics and identify areas for improvement. “I am honored and privileged to serve here,” she noted, emphasizing her commitment to being approachable and engaged with the community.

Bresnahan is ready to make an impact on both the community and its students. “Our community desires a present, invested leader for Oak Park, and Dr. Bresnahan is equipped to excel in listening, relationship-building, and advancing our initiatives,” Moore concluded.
