Teenager Identified Decades After Remains Found in California Vineyard

A mystery lasting nearly 50 years has been solved as the identity of a teenager found buried in a California vineyard has been confirmed. Michelle Louise Collier, 15 years old at the time of her disappearance in February 1978, has been identified after her remains were unearthed by a tractor operator near Arvin four months later. Her family, particularly her sister Cynthia Dunbar, is relieved to finally know what happened to her.

“She disappeared 48 years ago, and it was only recently that we knew where she was,” Dunbar expressed during an emotional press conference. “At least with this information, my family has some closure.”

Collier’s remains, found on June 21, 1978, were initially unidentified, referred to as “Arvin Jane Doe.” Despite an autopsy confirming homicide, the cause of death remained undetermined. Over the decades, technological advances and renewed efforts kept the case alive. Identifying her has turned a corner in this lengthy investigation.

In 2025, investigators utilized forensic investigative genetic genealogy. This involves advanced DNA analysis combined with genealogical research. Partnering with Othram, a Texas-based forensic lab, they developed a robust DNA profile, linking Collier to potential relatives.

Collier’s identification is the 86th resolved case in California utilizing Othram’s genetic genealogy technology. This breakthrough arrived after DNA samples from Collier’s family members, including a half-brother, assisted investigators in making connections.

Her family received her remains from Arvin Cemetery in April 2026 after the confirmation of her identity. They were finally able to give Michelle a proper burial.

“You didn’t deserve to die this way, Shelley,” Dunbar said affectionately, addressing Michelle by her nickname. “Barely 15 years old, still a child, with your whole life ahead of you.”

The case remains active. Kern County Sheriff’s Office is seeking additional information about Collier’s life and circumstances leading to her death. Detective Ashley Thompson stressed the importance of knowing the victim as the investigation progresses.
