Steve Smith Sr. Joins ESPN After Recent Layoffs

ESPN is undergoing changes following a merger with the NFL Network, resulting in notable layoffs. The network is now seeking to fill positions, including those previously held by Cam Newton and Karl Ravech. Steve Smith Sr., a former Carolina Panthers teammate of Newton, is set to join ESPN.

According to Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports, Smith is “expected to have a recurring role on ESPN studio programming.” This includes appearances on shows such as “Get Up,” “First Take,” and “NFL Live.” Steve Smith Sr. made his name as a fiery receiver not only with the Panthers but also with the Baltimore Ravens.

He joined the NFL Network as an analyst after retiring in 2016, reports Sam Neumann of Awful Announcing. Smith also hosts “The 89 Show,” a podcast focused on wide receivers. The podcast is named after his jersey number and co-hosted by NFL Network insider James Palmer. Smith analyzes the wide receiver position, using his playing experience, while Palmer provides insights from his front-office and coaching sources.

Smith is known for his candid critiques of players, including a notable feud with Denver Broncos’ Jerry Jeudy. Smith once labeled Jeudy as a “JAG”—or “just a guy”—suggesting the team might eventually let him go. Despite Smith’s attempts to apologize, Jeudy did not accept the criticism lightly.

Smith addressed Jeudy directly on NFL Network, saying, “I’ll say it again, I’m sorry I said you were a JAG, just a guy, who’s an average wide receiver,” while hoping Jeudy would perform better on the field.

Beyond his exchanges with Jeudy, Smith had a publicized disagreement with Newton. However, the two reconciled in an episode of “The 89 Show.” Through their discussions, they resolved past issues, showcasing Smith’s willingness to mend relationships.
