Stefon Diggs’ Penalty Costs Commanders in Season Opener

Late in the fourth quarter, Diggs scored his first touchdown for the Commanders, bringing them within two points of the Eagles. With 9:59 remaining in the game, his touchdown seemed to shift momentum.

However, after his score, Diggs celebrated by jumping and wrapping himself around the goalpost. This action drew a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalty pushed the Commanders’ two-point conversion attempt back, leading them to opt for an extra point instead.

The penalty altered the Commanders’ strategy. Head coach Dan Quinn later confirmed that they would have gone for a two-point conversion if not for the penalty.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels spoke candidly about the situation. “You just gotta be smarter,” Daniels stated, as reported by Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper. “We gotta know situations, situational football. That’s on me for not reiterating that in the huddle. We just gotta be smart. There’s a time and place for everything.”

Diggs accepted responsibility for his actions. He admitted the penalty was a mistake, acknowledging its impact on the game.

The Commanders had another opportunity to tie late in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, they failed their two-point attempt, resulting in a 24-22 loss to the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
