Socialist Movement Challenges Wisconsin Democratic Primary

The Wisconsin Democratic primary showcases a battle between establishment figures and a socialist wave. Former Governor Scott Walker provides an analysis of this intense political contest alongside host Harris Faulkner. They focus on Francesca Hong, a candidate supported by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), scrutinizing her progressive policies and controversial statements.

A social media post from Hong, dated January 20, 2022, captures her vision for transforming America from a land of “suffering” to “a wealth of opportunity.” Hong emphasizes the need for equal rights and representation for Black and Brown communities, advocating for leaders who will challenge racism.

Hong’s candidacy has stirred attention due to her critical views on American traditions and institutions. In a now-deleted post, she proposed cancelling Thanksgiving, labeling it a celebration of colonialism and the initial event of smallpox spreading among indigenous peoples.

“Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621,” Hong wrote.

Despite her previous posts, Hong runs for governor in Wisconsin’s Democratic primary, representing a surge of socialist candidates challenging established Democrats.

The candidate faced backlash over past comments addressing racism. In a 2019 post, Hong expressed anxiety in the presence of White people, illustrating personal experiences and societal challenges.

“Mostly just wanted to leave bc I was on the verge of an anxiety attack,” Hong mentioned, describing a situation in Black River Falls.

Hong’s stance on policing has been steadfast, advocating for police abolition following high-profile incidents like the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha. Her view links policing with upholding White supremacy, calling for defunding and reform.

Hong’s team, however, acknowledges these statements are part of broader aspirations, emphasizing values that haven’t changed but clarifying her approach in discussing these issues.

“Rep. Hong has spoken about police and prison abolition as an aspirational goal,” a spokesperson noted.

Hong remains firm amidst scrutiny, clarifying her previous posts as expressions during her time aspiring to be a sports journalist. She highlights her focus on voter concerns, stating that while the governor cannot defund police, she aims to address core community issues.

Hong also faces questions about lacking endorsement from figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She continues to concentrate on topics significant to Wisconsin voters as the primary election approaches.
