1952: Adlai Stevenson’s Reluctant Campaign

Despite his statements, Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson became a key figure in the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Drafted to be a candidate on the third ballot, Stevenson spoke solemnly of his campaign obligations.

“I have no feeling of exultation, nor sense of triumph,” Stevenson said. “I shall ask my God to give me courage in this great undertaking.”

The election concluded with Dwight D. Eisenhower defeating Stevenson, marking a Republican victory after 24 years.

1964: Jimmy Hoffa’s Conviction

Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa faced legal challenges in Chicago. Convicted of three fraud counts regarding the Teamsters’ Central States Pension Fund and one conspiracy count, he had earlier faced a jury tampering conviction.

1985: World’s Largest Block Party

Old St. Patrick’s Church commemorated its 140th anniversary with the first “World’s Largest Block Party.” Tickets were $15 with festivities featuring performances by Stanley Paul & His Orchestra and the Jesse White Tumblers. The annual event paused in 2020.

2005: Greg Maddux’s 3,000th Strikeout

Despite a rain delay, Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux reached a career milestone at Wrigley Field, recording his 3,000th strikeout. He retired Omar Vizquel of the San Francisco Giants, marking his entry as the 13th member of the 3,000-strikeout club.
