Sen. Ruben Gallego Faces Scrutiny Over Endorsements and Personal History

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., is experiencing criticism over his decisions to endorse two Democratic candidates involved in controversies. Gallego retracted his support for Graham Platner, a Maine Senate nominee, following a rape allegation. Previously, he withdrew his endorsement from Eric Swalwell’s California gubernatorial bid amid separate allegations of sexual misconduct.

Both Platner and Swalwell have denied these accusations. Gallego described the allegations against Platner as “troubling and deeply serious” in a social media post. Platner’s former girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, criticized Gallego’s delayed reaction, suggesting he had ample warning signs before rescinding his endorsement. Fifield detailed incidents of aggressive behavior by Platner during their past relationship.

Fifield’s allegations appeared in a New York Times report, describing instances where Platner allegedly acted aggressively. Despite this, Platner received support from key Democratic figures. Jon Lovett, a host of “Pod Save America,” acknowledged these reports yet emphasized the political necessity of maintaining a Democratic majority in the Senate. Fellow host Jon Favreau had previously spoken positively about Platner.

A Gallego spokesperson stated, “Senator Gallego did the right thing,” when he distanced himself from Platner once the values he champions were compromised. Notably, Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., expressed frustration towards those who still supported Platner, stating they should apologize for overlooking the claims.

The latest allegations against Platner come from Jenny Racicot, who accused him of entering her home uninvited and assaulting her. Platner has denied these allegations. This development prompted both renewed calls for Platner’s withdrawal and reflections on Gallego’s earlier endorsement decisions.

Meanwhile, Gallego’s personal and financial history has drawn attention. Criticism has been directed towards his 2016 divorce from Kate Gallego while she was pregnant. Campaign spending on family travel and personal expenses has also been scrutinized. Reports mention Gallego’s use of campaign funds for trips and attending the 2023 Super Bowl, which he defended as legitimate fundraising expenditure.
