The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has implemented a new policy that prohibits players who have been drafted by NFL, NBA, or WNBA teams, or have appeared on rosters in those leagues, from returning to college sports. This decision aligns the SEC with the Big Ten, which also took action recently to address the surge of professional players seeking a return to college athletics.
The SEC’s ruling is comprehensive, covering multiple sports, whereas the Big Ten’s decision only applies to football. This marks a significant stance by the two leading college sports conferences in response to court orders that previously permitted players, once released by professional teams, to seek eligibility in college sports again.
This move has immediate implications for programs like Louisiana State University (LSU). Recently, LSU’s coach, Lane Kiffin, added two undrafted players, Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, to the roster. Both players had participated in NFL tryouts but were ultimately released during training camp.
