San Antonio Spurs Strengthen Coaching Staff with Billy Donovan

The San Antonio Spurs have bolstered their already impressive squad by adding Billy Donovan as the new lead assistant coach under head coach Mitch Johnson. This move comes after a highly successful season, showcasing the team’s young talents such as Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. Each of these players is under 23, with Wembanyama earning the Western Conference Finals MVP, Castle being named the 2025 Rookie of the Year, and Harper securing a spot on the All-Rookie First Team.

However, despite the 62-win season and reaching the NBA Finals, the Spurs faced a disappointing collapse. They lost a massive 29-point lead in Game 4 and a late edge in Game 5, allowing the New York Knicks to emerge victorious. Coach Johnson acknowledged the team’s lack of preparedness, stating they “weren’t ready to win an NBA championship.” This is where Donovan is expected to make a significant impact.

Donovan, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025, brings a wealth of experience. He led the Florida Gators to consecutive national championships in 2006 and 2007. He began his NBA journey with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2015, securing 55 wins and reaching the Western Conference finals in his first year. Donovan then moved to the Chicago Bulls in 2020, managing a 226-256 overall record over six seasons, and only reaching the playoffs once.

The decision to hire Donovan comes amidst speculations about his potential roles elsewhere, including as a finalist for the Orlando Magic’s head coach position. Ironically, this was the position vacated by Sean Sweeney, who became the associate head coach of the Magic after helping the Spurs’ star Wembanyama achieve the Defensive Player of the Year award.

At 61, Donovan is already accomplished at the collegiate level, with a Hall of Fame nod. Yet, an NBA title remains elusive. Joining the Spurs, a team well-positioned for a championship, could change that. Moreover, Donovan could be poised as a natural successor should Johnson face any future challenges.
