Ruston Kelly Chooses Sobriety After Accident

Ruston Kelly embarked on a journey to sobriety following a serious golf cart accident that nearly altered his life. The country singer, aged 37, revealed he was three days sober after a relapse brought on by the accident in June. In an open social media post, he reflected on his recent challenges and shared his gratitude.

Kelly displayed a gold Narcotics Anonymous token, a symbol of his recovery. It had the inscription: ‘My gratitude speaks when I care and when I share with others the NA way.’ These tokens are often exchanged in meetings to celebrate milestones in clean living.

In 2021, Kelly had convinced himself that avoiding amphetamines meant he was on the right path. On Instagram, he shared, ‘I had never been addicted to any drug other than those pills. I initially included alcohol and THC in my abstinence because I thought that’s what I was supposed to do.’

He realized he was not traditionally addicted but viewed addiction as specific to amphetamines. ‘I’ve never had a problem with alcohol, I’ve never had a problem with XYZ,’ he stated. ‘I can show self-control.’

After his accident, Kelly’s broken arm led to prescribed opioids like fentanyl and oxycodone. ‘I needed it for the level 15 pain but very quickly they started running out sooner and sooner,’ he admitted. This experience reignited a dependence he thought he had overcome.

On July 26, he decided to embrace sobriety for the sake of his soul, family, career, and artistry. ‘ALL drugs/substances including alcohol and THC are off the table for good,’ Kelly asserted, aiming to conquer his substance abuse disease.

He concluded by stating, ‘I am 3 days completely clean and sober again, and intend to remain this way forever, one day at a time.’
