Russia Continues Aggression on Ukraine, Amidst Diplomatic Efforts

On September 28, 2026, ongoing bombardments from Russia resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals and injuries to over fifty more in Ukraine. These attacks were aimed at residential areas, including apartment buildings and offices, as well as a significant cultural site, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, located in central Kyiv. This assault underscores Moscow’s persistent aggression in the region.

Aidan Stretch, a CBS News correspondent, witnessed the destruction at the science academy but quickly had to seek shelter from further incoming strikes. The violence followed a week marked by diplomatic endeavors at the United Nations, aimed at halting the full-scale invasion initiated by Moscow 4½ years ago.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described prospects for peace as dim, especially after recent Ukrainian actions, including targeted strikes during Russian parliamentary elections.

In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Europe of hindering peace talks, while suggesting a division within the NATO alliance.

Russian Drone Attacks on Eastern Ukraine

The Kyiv region suffered from Russian drone assaults, which resulted in four fatalities and eight injuries. Among these attacks was the strike on Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, which claimed the life of a woman and damaged the National Academy of Sciences. Additional strikes hit a pharmaceutical company and gas stations.

Tensions mounted as a Russian drone hit an office center in Dnipro, resulting in three deaths and over a dozen injuries. Further north in Chernihiv, another strike injured four individuals, as reported by a regional military leader.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed responsibility for striking multiple locations, including two data centers in Kyiv and gas stations. In southern Ukraine, a Nova Poshta postal service hub was hit, possibly affecting grain exports and contributing to potential food shortages.

Ukraine’s Military Response

Despite the limited changes in battlefield positions due to dense drone activities, Ukraine has launched Operation Vivaldi, aiming to reclaim territory. Kyiv’s forces reported recapturing a total of 68 square miles in recent months, converting outdated Soviet-era vehicles into kamikaze units to breach Russian defenses.

Claims of territorial gains have come primarily from the Donetsk region, a contested area sought by Russia. The Russian military announced some territorial captures, yet these remain unverified.

Escalating Drone Warfare

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed long-range strikes targeting Russian industrial sites, further straining Moscow’s economy. Overnight, drones reportedly ignited fires at three infrastructure sites within Russia’s Krasnodar region, prompting a response from Russian air defenses, which claimed the downing of hundreds of drones.
