Roof Collapse in New Jersey Store Due to Heavy Rains

Heavy rains struck New Jersey on Monday, leading to a partial roof collapse at a big box store, temporarily trapping two individuals inside. First responders, including Ocean Township police, Monmouth Court Sheriff’s deputies, and others, quickly arrived at BJ’s Wholesale Club around 11:16 a.m. according to the sheriff’s office.

There were 27 people present in the store at the time of the incident. Two people were partially trapped but managed to free themselves and exit the store safely, as stated by the sheriff.

Videos captured rainwater flooding the BJ’s Wholesale Store in Oakhurst, New Jersey, on Monday. Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden remarked, “This incident is a reminder of how quickly severe weather can cause dangerous and unpredictable conditions.” He expressed appreciation for the first responders who acted urgently under difficult circumstances.

Despite continuous flooding and severe weather impacts on the community, all responders collaborated efficiently to account for everyone’s safety. Their efforts reflect the best in public safety services. No injuries were immediately reported.

By early Monday afternoon, over two inches of rain had fallen in South Jersey, approximately 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
