Rescues Amidst Venezuela’s Earthquake Tragedy

The Associated Press released footage of 18-day-old Juan David and his mother Dayana Patino being rescued from debris in La Guaira after enduring 32 hours trapped. The video has captured worldwide attention.

A voice in Spanish congratulates Patino, saying, “You are tough, Mami, you are tough,” as she smiles while still trapped. The image of infant Juan David post-rescue and Patino under the rubble has been widely shared. Patino, speaking to BBC News from her hospital bed in Caracas, recounted how she was washing dishes on the eighth floor when the earthquakes struck. She recalled, “I don’t know how I didn’t let go of my baby because I was flying,” and explained she was pinned against furniture. Her will to protect her baby motivated her survival, she said. “As long as he was alive, I was going to be alive.” Both continue to receive medical care.

The twin earthquakes on Wednesday caused extensive damage in Venezuela, resulting in at least 1,719 fatalities and leaving countless missing. By Tuesday, hopes of finding more survivors dwindled. The United Nations agreed with Venezuelan authorities to supply 10,000 body bags, preparing for a potential rise in the death toll. Officials have not confirmed how many are missing, but UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher called an estimate of 50,000 unaccounted for “terrifyingly plausible.”

Over 5,000 injuries and displacement of 12,000 individuals have occurred, according to the UN. On Monday, Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez stated ongoing rescue efforts inspire emotion and hope for families and the nation. International teams continue to assist in search operations, though the critical 72-hour mark for extracting survivors from beneath the debris has passed.
