Early Voting Trends in Texas

Two key Democratic areas in Texas, Harris and Dallas counties, have reported high early-voting numbers. This is considered a promising sign for Democrats in regions where winning is critical.

Senate and Gubernatorial Contests

Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is showing potential to secure the seat, as polls reveal a slight lead over Republican contender Ken Paxton. In the gubernatorial race, Republican Governor Greg Abbott faces a close contest with Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa. Current polls indicate Hinojosa has reduced the gap to approximately 2 points.

Texas has not seen a Democratic win in statewide elections for 32 years. This potential shift has Republicans concerned about party control over the Senate during President Donald Trump’s remaining time in office. Trump won Texas by nearly 14 points in the 2024 election, but his approval ratings have dropped due to issues such as economic concerns, high gas prices, and the conflict with Iran.

In response, Republicans have been rallying rural and suburban voters. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and commentator Mark Levin discussed the stakes on Patrick’s podcast, emphasizing the importance of mobilizing voters.

Early Voting Day 1 Results

Harris County, home to Houston, reported breaking its previous midterm election first-day turnout record. By 3:30 p.m. Monday, more than 70,000 voters were processed, surpassing the 2018 record of 63,188 with hours to spare.

Meanwhile, Dallas County surpassed its previous first-day early voting record, with 76,069 voters compared to 60,573 in 2020. El Paso County saw the second-highest early voting turnout in midterm election history, recording 22,412 votes.

Harris and Dallas counties offer significant margins for Democratic candidates. El Paso, known for its Democratic leaning, often experiences lower voter turnout than other major Democratic areas.

Republican Efforts to Mobilize Voters

Lieutenant Governor Patrick highlighted the need for rural and suburban voter turnout. He stated that it’s crucial for these voters to balance Democratic votes. Conservative influencer Levin stressed the importance of voter mobilization to secure Republican victories.

Republicans are concerned about potential changes in voter demographics and Democratic organizing efforts in Texas. Over $158 million in external spending has been directed into the race by Republican leadership. Trump has also made several visits to the state to encourage voter support for Paxton.

Newspaper Endorsements and Polls

James Talarico received endorsements from prominent Texas newspapers, including The Dallas Morning News, which previously supported Republican John Cornyn. The paper’s editorial board criticized Paxton’s history of scandals.

Recent polls show Talarico edging out Paxton, often within the margin of error. The RealClearPolitics average indicates Talarico leading by 2.2 points. Different surveys present varying results, with Talarico generally maintaining a small lead.

Governor Race Polling Data

Governor Abbott is leading in most recent polls, though by smaller margins. The RealClearPolitics average positions Abbott ahead by 3.4 points. Various polls show Abbott with a slight edge, yet Hinojosa appears narrowly ahead in a few surveys.
