The explosion took place on Saturday night beside the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church in Temascalcingo, a municipality situated in central Mexico. This area, home to around 66,000 people, was preparing for a fireworks display that is customary in local religious festivals.

The town is positioned approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. Following the blast, many gathered to offer prayers, commemorating patron saint festivities honoring the Virgin of the Light.
