Providence’s Roman Guzman Shines After Gothia Cup Experience

Providence’s Roman Guzman recently traveled to Sweden in July to participate in the Gothia Cup, recognized as the largest international youth soccer tournament. This experience enriched the junior defender with new insights and heightened motivation.

“Coming from America, the difference was palpable,” Guzman explained. “Everything, from technical skills to physical play, was significantly advanced. It was incredible.”

Guzman applied his new skills effectively during Providence’s season opener, contributing a goal and an assist, leading the Celtics to a 7-0 victory over Joliet Catholic. Jovanny Gonzalez spearheaded Providence with two goals and an assist. Billy Savarino, Christian Hofferica, Aldo Dominguez, and Chris Serrano each added goals. Aleksander Chavez and Caleb Pintar combined efforts for the game’s shutout, with Chavez notably saving a penalty shot.

The defensive line, including Guzman, Luca Bullion, Cameron Klene, James Nagle, and Cooper Wojcik, limited Joliet Catholic to a single shot on goal. Mark Vasecka made six saves for Joliet Catholic.

This game marked a milestone for Providence coach Mike Taylor, achieving his 600th career boys soccer win. “I wasn’t aware of the milestone,” Taylor said. “It was a surprise, but an enjoyable journey; the engagement with the kids keeps it exciting.”

The Celtics exhibited a strong start by establishing a 4-0 lead in the first half. Guzman scored his second varsity goal just before halftime by capitalizing on a rebound from a Leo Mendoza shot. “Scoring is always fun, especially with this supportive team,” Guzman remarked.

Guzman’s experience in Sweden was exhilarating, playing for the LA Bulls of MLS Next. “Leading and being captain was fulfilling,” he said. “Securing an assist added to the achievement.”

Originally from Joliet, Guzman contemplated attending Joliet Catholic but decided to join Providence, heavily influenced by his long-time friend, Jovanny Gonzalez. “Choosing Providence was the right decision,” Guzman stated. “Playing against Joliet Catholic is memorable.”

Gonzalez expressed gratitude for Guzman’s choice. “Roman’s dedication is unmatched,” Gonzalez shared. “I’ve known him since we were five, and he always fulfills his goals.”

Determined and focused, Guzman is eager to continue playing on significant stages, inspired by his time in Sweden. “The experience in Sweden ignited something within me,” he concluded. “I’m eager to revisit such high-caliber play.”
