In Madison, Wisconsin, a police officer fatally shot a man who had injured him with a knife while resisting arrest. The incident, which occurred in a bustling neighborhood near the state Capitol, has led to swift protests as demonstrators demand accountability.
Cellphone video capturing the event has surfaced on social media, revealing the sound of three gunshots. Madison Police Chief John Patterson emphasized that the footage shared online presents only one perspective of the incident. At a news conference, Patterson extended his condolences to the man’s family. The victim, a male in his 30s, has not been publicly identified by authorities.
The shooting unfolded on a vibrant city street known for its restaurants, bars, shops, and residential areas, located less than two miles from the Capitol. Witnesses captured the scene of cars halted at an intersection as the incident took place. This street has a prior history of police-related incidents; in 2015, a white officer shot and killed Tony Robinson, a biracial man, prompting widespread protests. The district attorney did not press charges against the officer, concluding the shooting was justified. The race of the officers involved in the latest incident has not been disclosed.
Black advocacy groups in Madison have been vocal, asserting that the victim was Black. Brandi Grayson, leader of Urban Triage, a Black community advocacy organization, criticized the act, stating, “Another Black man is dead on a Madison street, and our community watched him die before we even knew his name.”
A crowd gathered shortly after the shooting near the site, where they chanted, “Arrest the cops!” Participants laid flowers and candles and held a vigil as the crowd grew into the night. Protesters marched to the Wisconsin State Capitol, interrupting a summer concert series to demand the officer’s name and accountability. The concert was subsequently canceled.
Chief Patterson reported officers responded to calls about someone attempting to enter parked vehicles in the neighborhood. The suspect fled on a bicycle through nearby backyards before police confronted him in the street. During the struggle, the suspect drew a knife, injuring an officer. Despite attempts to subdue the suspect with a taser, the officer, who was injured, fired his weapon. The suspect died later at the hospital.
The officer who fired was described as a veteran, though further details were not released. Another officer sustained injuries in the incident, but the cause was not clarified. The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation will handle the investigation. All four involved officers are on administrative leave in line with department policy.
