Many Democratic voters express disappointment with the party establishment. They argue that leaders have not done enough to counter Trump’s administration. A poll by YouGov and The Economist found that 73 percent of Democrats feel their elected officials challenge Trump “too little.” This sentiment poses challenges for the party establishment as they try to protect incumbents.

Michigan Senate and House Races

The Michigan Senate primary between Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens is a highlight. It is a significant race that could influence control of the chamber in the November elections. Several House races might see progressives rise over moderates. One closely watched race is in Michigan’s 7th District.

In this competitive swing district, progressive William Lawrence faces two moderate Democrats: Bridget Brink, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, and Matt Maasdam, ex-Navy SEAL and White House official.

The race is tight. The district supported Trump by a narrow margin in 2024. Barrett flipped the seat that year, while then-Representative Elissa Slotkin was elected to the Senate. The district includes Lansing, a Democratic stronghold, and rural conservative areas.

Polls reveal Lawrence leading with 38 percent support. Maasdam follows with 27 percent, and Brink has 19 percent. Prediction markets favor Lawrence with high probabilities of winning.

Lawrence has criticized politicians like Tom Barrett for being funded by corporate donors. He aims to show that grassroots movements can succeed despite challenges from big-money super PACs. Thanedar highlights his advocacy for policies like Medicare for All and his work opposing a detention facility planned by ICE in his district. He contrasts himself with McKinney, describing him as an opportunist.

Prominent progressives such as Bernie Sanders and Rashida Tlaib have endorsed McKinney. Thanedar has been criticized for issues like promoting his services using taxpayer funds.

Missouri’s Closely Watched Rematch

In Missouri’s 1st District, Wesley Bell and Cori Bush face off again in a rematch. Bell, a more moderate Democrat, defeated Bush in 2024. Despite outside spending in previous races, Bell’s current attacks focus on Bush’s vote against the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

Polling is limited, but a survey conducted by HIT Strategies gives Bell a slight lead. Prediction markets currently favor Bell to win the primary.
