Prince Harry is coming back to Britain, accompanied by his wife Meghan and their children. This visit could mend ties with the royal family. Six years have passed since their choice to leave active royal duties, cut royal ties, and move to the U.S. These actions strained Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles III, and his elder brother, Prince William, the heir to the throne.
The reasons for their return are unclear. Harry, age 41 and fifth in line for the throne, showed interest in reconciling to spend more time with his father, who is undergoing cancer treatment. They have enrolled their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in British schools, set to begin in September. Details about their stay remain vague.
Living Situation
Harry and Meghan will not resume royal roles. They plan to reside in a private residence outside London. Their Montecito home in Southern California and vacation property in Portugal will remain theirs. Meghan will continue running her company As Ever from the UK. Harry aims to focus on his British charities.
Jennie Bond, a former BBC royal correspondent, told Sky News, “Maybe Meghan is sacrificing for the team because her desire might not be to return to the UK.”
King Charles Informed Recently
Harry’s visits to the UK have been infrequent. He has been involved in lawsuits against British tabloids with varying outcomes. His visits to his father were brief until recently. Last month, Harry, Meghan, and their children spent time with King Charles and Queen Camilla. This was the first meeting with their grandfather since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
British media reported that King Charles was informed about Harry and Meghan’s plans only on Sunday.
Jennie Bond commented, “If I were the king, I would think it strange not having been told during their recent visit.” Buckingham Palace refrains from commenting on non-active royal family members.
Efforts to Reconcile
Harry has shown willingness to reconcile, mentioning a desire to stop fighting with his family. He acknowledged his father’s limited time. Healing wounds with his brother William might be challenging.
Previous conflicts damaged royal ties. An interview with Oprah Winfrey and a Netflix series aired grievances about the Palace’s insensitivity towards Meghan’s mental health. They alleged racist remarks were made when Meghan was pregnant with their first child.
Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare” claimed his brother attacked him physically over Meghan. Harry also labeled Camilla “dangerous” and accused her of colluding with tabloids to enhance her own image. Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt suggested the surprise move would unsettle William.
Hunt noted, “Harry’s return may strengthen his connection with his father and make it harder for William to avoid reconciliation.”
Security Concerns
Harry has expressed disappointment over the removal of police protection during UK visits. He attributes Diana’s death in a paparazzi chase in Paris to the press and fears similar threats.
Before leaving royal life, Harry’s security was top-level but dropped to a case-by-case assessment. He typically travels with private security.
The family’s return raises questions about security agreements or a change in government security assessments for VIPs.
Legal Challenges and Costs
Harry engaged in legal battles with British tabloids for alleged privacy invasions, such as phone hacking and employing private investigators.
While some cases concluded in his favor, last month Harry and others, including Elton John, lost a case against the Daily Mail’s publisher. A judge will rule on Friday regarding costs, totaling 34.5 million pounds ($47 million USD). Harry likely faces substantial legal fees himself.
