The San Antonio Spurs have secured the Western Conference title, earning a chance to face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. Victor Wembanyama, a noticeable figure in this journey, had a moment of reflection when asked about Gregg Popovich, the legendary former coach of the Spurs.
Wembanyama, visibly moved, expressed gratitude and respect for Popovich. He acknowledged Popovich’s extensive experience and deep involvement with the team even after stepping down. Wembanyama emphasized his desire to speak with Popovich, stating, “I need to call him. I need to see him. I need to talk to him because there’s no way I can understand right now how he feels.” Although Popovich’s official title remains President of Spurs Basketball, his unofficial role as “El Jefe” persists.
Although retired, Popovich frequently attends practices and games, offering guidance to players and coaches. He is remembered fondly for engaging with the team during critical moments. His influence remains significant, leading many to refer to him as a coach emeritus.
Devin Vassell, a guard for the Spurs, praised Popovich’s wealth of experience. “He helps out. … He just has so much wisdom and stuff that you can’t take for granted,” Vassell noted.
Knicks coach Mike Brown, who once served as an assistant under Popovich, praised his enduring influence on and off the court. Brown highlighted Popovich’s lasting impact on the game and the Spurs organization, stating, “He still has a huge presence. He will always have a presence.”
Popovich’s presence and influence were evident when he met the Spurs at the airport after a crucial semifinal series game. Wembanyama, despite a recent incident resulting in an ejection, was guided by Popovich in a private exchange upon returning.
Having secured five NBA championships, Popovich is an invaluable resource for the current Spurs coach, Mitch Johnson. Johnson appreciates Popovich’s continued involvement, stating, “I’m fortunate my old boss is still around, and has been through this a few times. Coach Pop has been a resource.”
As the Spurs prepare for the Finals, Wembanyama shares his eagerness to consult “El Jefe.” His desire to absorb Popovich’s insights and strategies highlights Popovich’s prevailing influence. “But I need to talk to him, so quick,” Wembanyama emphasized. The pursuit of victory continues, and Popovich’s wisdom remains a guiding force.
