Lichtschein’s Encounter with Ms. Rachel

Lichtschein recounted meeting Accurso while both were with their children at the park. He questioned her views on Israel, prompting her to clarify that her stance is against the Israeli government, not Israel itself. Lichtschein argued against this distinction, pointing out that the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is the elected leader of Israel.

The discussion escalated when Accurso reportedly accused Israel of genocide in its conflict with Hamas, citing the number of children killed. Lichtschein attempted to differentiate between war and genocide, emphasizing the gravity of the latter claim.

Lichtschein noted Accurso’s insistence on having a personal connection to the Jewish community through her husband’s family, but he criticized her for spreading harmful rhetoric, warning her of its repercussions.

Public Responsibility and Rhetoric

In a follow-up, Lichtschein engaged with Accurso’s husband, expressing regret for any distress caused without retracting his statements. He stressed the impact of Accurso’s public commentary, arguing that her platform carries significant responsibility.

What she’s doing is motivated by compassion for children, but I think she’s very naïve and doesn’t realize what her actions are doing to the Jewish community at large.

Accurso’s Self-Identification

Accurso described herself as a Zionist similar to figures like Brad Lander, a former New York City Comptroller. Lichtschein highlighted this as a teaching moment about the effects of influential rhetoric on the Jewish community and relations between followers of different ideologies.
