United States men’s national team (USMNT) manager Mauricio Pochettino has declared his strong Argentine identity, yet he is fully embracing American culture during the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup. A notable instance was when Pochettino passionately sang John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ after the USMNT’s victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on July 1.
The excitement continues with a Major League Baseball appearance. The Seattle Mariners have announced that Pochettino and the USMNT will throw the ceremonial first pitch in their game against the Toronto Blue Jays at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on July 3.
During Thursday’s training, an engaging moment was captured by FOX Sports’ Doug McIntyre. He filmed a video where goalkeeper Matt Turner instructs Pochettino on baseball throwing techniques. The USMNT’s official Instagram account also showcased a clip of Christian Pulisic, Chris Richards, and Weston McKennie practicing their throws.
The USMNT is set to face Belgium in the Round of 16 at Lumen Field in Seattle on July 6 at 8 p.m. EST. Historically, their last World Cup battle with Belgium was in 2014 in the same round, where Belgium won 2-1. More recently, Belgium defeated the USMNT 5-2 in an international friendly in March.
Pochettino remains unfazed by the USMNT’s previous lackluster World Cup performances. He expresses confidence, asserting, ‘Why not us?’ after their victory over Bosnia. A triumph over Belgium would earn the USMNT their first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 2002, when they lost to Germany.
