Perspectives of Pennsylvania Swing Voters Amid Economic Concerns

John’s View on Economic Challenges

John, a resident of Philadelphia, regularly shops at discount retailers. He notices an increase in prices for daily essentials. Referring to dollar stores now charging more than a dollar, John attributes this to recent economic policies. “Well, it became the ‘$1.25 store’ under Biden,” he mentions during an interview.

John, aged 60, participates in NPR’s Swing Shift project, which examines voters’ long-term perspectives. He talks about affordability issues affecting homeownership and essentials like food. Living in Northern Philadelphia with his family, John recalls that a $60,000 annual income once signified upper-middle class, a stark contrast to today’s standards.

His voting history includes supporting Trump in 2016 and 2024, and Biden in 2020. However, rising inflation has led to his dissatisfaction with the current administration. He graded the president’s performance with a C, which was previously a B+.

Stephen’s Struggle with Rising Costs

Stephen, living in a Philadelphia suburb, only works part-time due to a disability. Despite his efforts, he often struggles to afford necessities. “There are some months that I do run out of food,” he shares, indicating challenges with soaring prices for meat and eggs.

Stephen comments on additional economic stressors, such as tariffs and international conflict. A personal instance is the prohibitive cost of concert tickets for his favorite band, Rush. The significant ticket prices deter him from attending, highlighting his budgeting priorities.

Originally voting for Biden and later Trump, Stephen assigns a D grade to Trump’s performance. He believes the president’s priorities mainly serve wealthier individuals, leaving others, like himself, overlooked.

Colleen’s Perspective on Economic and Social Issues

Colleen, a mother from Pittsburgh, expresses concerns over gas prices. Her daughters’ fascination with fidget toys frequently leads to trips across town, a task impacted by fluctuating gas prices.

While her economic standing is stable, she acknowledges the lack of a financial buffer. Colleen, who hasn’t been actively following news and politics, shares her disillusionment with Trump’s promises. She expresses concerns regarding education, youth mental health, and local homelessness, emphasizing a need for domestic focus.

Colleen’s experiences with high gas and milk prices reinforce her frustration with current economic trends. Despite her work and volunteering commitments, economic pressures remain a consistent concern.
