Pentagon Official No Longer with Department of the Navy After Controversial Remarks

Brandon Newsom, a senior official previously placed on administrative leave, is no longer with the Department of the Navy. This announcement came from Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao on Sunday. Cao posted the update on social media, stating, “The individual is no longer employed by the Department of the Navy.” The post did not clarify whether Newsom resigned, was terminated, or left through other means.

Earlier in the week, conservative activist James O’Keefe released hidden-camera footage. The video reportedly showed Newsom criticizing President Donald Trump. The content also included discussions about reversing Trump administration policies. Newsweek has not been able to independently verify the footage.

Within the video, Newsom mentioned his desire to remain at the Pentagon. He suggested he wanted to “undo whatever’s been done” under the Trump administration. He expressed disagreement with some policies, such as religious services at the Pentagon, and changes affecting federal employees.

Newsom labeled Trump a “textbook narcissist” and critiqued the conflict with Iran. He described it as “completely stupid” and “driven by one man’s ego.” Following the video’s release, Acting Secretary Hung Cao announced Newsom’s administrative leave, pending an investigation.

Cao emphasized the seriousness of the conduct shown in the video. “Such statements and apparent intent to leverage a position to undermine the policies and direction set by our elected leaders are inappropriate and incompatible with the standards expected of Department personnel,” Cao commented on social media.
