Patrick Mahomes grew weary of discussions about his knee injury. On “Monday Night Football,” he quelled skeptics by leading the Kansas City Chiefs in a 10-play, 46-yard opening drive. This drive culminated in a 15-yard touchdown run, giving the Chiefs an early lead against the Denver Broncos.
Mahomes had suffered a torn ACL during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14. Remarkably, he returned after surgery to repair both his ACL and LCL to participate in Week 1. According to Jay Glazer from Fox Sports, Mahomes accelerated his recovery by undergoing surgery immediately, before knee swelling set in. Mahomes mentioned that he would have been ready to play by the start of mandatory minicamp.
Jay Glazer noted on social media:
Patrick Mahomes did something unique in his recovery from a torn ACL and LCL. He flew to Dallas for surgery before swelling and inflammation could occur. Players typically wait for swelling to subside before surgery. This approach allowed him to begin rehabilitation shortly after the injury. He aggressively tackled his rehab, letting me know he felt fully ready by early June. This is impressive!
During Monday Night’s game, Mahomes’ knee did not seem to hinder the Chiefs. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. On the ground, he contributed 23 yards and one touchdown, leading to a 31-10 victory over the Broncos.
The Chiefs didn’t rely solely on Mahomes. Running back Kenneth Walker III, a recent addition via free agency, played a significant role. He rushed for 173 yards and scored a touchdown on 23 carries, strengthening the team’s offense.
