Pastor’s Tragic Passing After Accident Abroad

A pastor from Elbow Lake, Minnesota, passed away after a severe spinal cord injury during a cruise in Italy celebrating his son’s wedding. Steve Junker was on the Sun Princess on August 16 when he tragically fell and was discovered face down, unresponsive in a pool, according to his family’s GoFundMe page.

Princess Cruises confirmed Junker’s death, expressing deep condolences to his family during this challenging time. The cruise line stated that staff were informed on August 16 that a passenger needed medical assistance, leading to immediate attention from the ship’s medical team and subsequent transfer to shore for additional care.

Junker’s family revealed he suffered a spinal cord injury, nearly drowning in the incident. Italian Coast Guard transported him to a hospital in Naples where he was admitted to the ICU following emergency spinal surgery. Though the surgery was successful, the injury remained severe.

“We are working through the medical, logistical, and financial challenges of arranging appropriate medical transport and getting him to a hospital in the United States,” the family shared before Junker’s passing.

Junker was eventually transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota on August 23 for further treatment. Surrounded by loved ones, he passed away on September 4, as shared by his family on Facebook. The family expressed gratitude for the prayers, support, and messages from friends and supporters during this difficult ordeal.

Steve Junker’s church remembered him fondly for his strong faith and impactful presence. Chippewa Lutheran Church published a tribute praising Pastor Steve’s influence and shared a tribute from his son, Nathaniel, who performed worship songs inspired by his father. The church’s message reflected solace that Junker’s spiritual journey continued beyond this life.

Junker had transitioned from a career as a pharmacist to answering the call to ministry, leaving behind his wife, five children, their spouses, a grandchild, and extended family. The touching tribute highlighted the enduring impact he had on the lives of those around him.
