1 week ago 0

Christopher Anne Affleck, the mother of actors Ben and Casey Affleck, has passed away following her battle with cancer. Reported by The Boston Globe, she died peacefully in her sleep on June 2 at the age of 83. Having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025, she was initially given six months to live.

Her obituary highlights a significant personal milestone, stating, “Her greatest wish after her diagnosis was to live to see her grandson graduate high school.” This wish was fulfilled on May 31, 2026, when Chris attended the graduation with her family. She passed away peacefully two days later.

Born in 1942 in New York City, Chris Affleck was an activist engaged in significant historical events. She taught literacy in Mississippi during Freedom Summer, protested against the Vietnam War, and participated in 1960s counterculture movements. She was among the first women at Radcliffe College to graduate from Harvard University and spent 35 years as a public school teacher, retiring in 2008.

Her role as an educator was profound. The obituary notes, “Every student, whether just arrived from Haiti or Cambridge upper crust, was a cherished citizen of her classroom republic, equal to each other and to herself.” After retiring, Chris devoted time to volunteer work, notably for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, and became deeply involved with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine.

Chris and her ex-husband, Timothy Affleck, had two sons: Ben, born in 1972, and Casey, born in 1975. Post-divorce in 1984, both sons frequently acknowledged their parents’ influence on their artistic endeavors. Casey conveyed in a 2013 interview with Collider that their early experiences in the arts were encouraged by their parents, with both having a deep-rooted affinity for theater.

Ben recounted his entry into acting in a 2007 Parade interview, describing it as somewhat coincidental due to a connection through one of his mother’s friends. His early exposure led to continued opportunities, eventually culminating in his Academy Award win for best original screenplay in 1998 with Matt Damon for “Good Will Hunting.”

During their Oscar win, Ben and Matt Damon brought their mothers as their guests. Ben reminisced about this occasion in an April 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, expressing surprise at the focus on their choice of companions. He remarked, “We were sitting next to our moms, and we won… I remember thinking, being insecure, ‘Why? Why is it weird that we’re bringing our moms?’”

Chris Affleck is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey, and her five grandchildren: Indiana and Atticus from Casey, and Violet, Fin, and Sam from Ben.
