Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Angie Nixon in Florida Senate Race

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, has endorsed progressive Democrat Angie Nixon for the Florida Senate race. Nixon, identified as a democratic socialist, will face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the election. Many view Moody as the front-runner due to Florida’s conservative trend. However, Democrats hope Nixon might help shift the state’s political leaning.

Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement is significant as she is a prominent progressive figure within the Democratic Party. Although she has not expressed plans to run for higher office, she supports reshaping the party with progressive ideals, following in the footsteps of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Ocasio-Cortez expressed her support for Nixon in a social media post stating, “Angie will be an exemplary fighter for the working families of Florida.” Nixon responded with gratitude, recognizing Ocasio-Cortez as a symbol of prioritizing people’s needs.

The race presents challenges for Nixon. Florida has a large Cuban American population, generally opposed to socialism, which could affect Nixon’s prospects. Polls show Republican Moody leading. The University of North Florida poll has Moody ahead by 8 points, with a margin of error of ±3.8 points, while a Stetson University poll shows a 13-point lead for Moody, with a margin of error of ±4.1 points.

Ocasio-Cortez’s Endorsement Strategy

Ocasio-Cortez has selectively endorsed candidates in 2026, mostly seeing success in primary outcomes. Federal candidates endorsed include Junaid Ahmed, Sam Forstag, Adam Hamawy, Abdul El-Sayed, Ed Markey, Analilia Mejia, Justin Pearson, Chris Rabb, and Randy Villegas. All except Ahmed won their primaries.

Her endorsements favor progressive candidates in diverse settings. Some candidates are expected to win easily in solidly Democratic areas, while others face tougher competition. These outcomes will indicate the popularity of progressive policies in competitive regions.

Locally, Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed figures like Brian Romero, David Orkin, Christian Celeste Tate, Eli Northrup, and Eon Huntley in State Assembly races, all securing primary victories. She also backed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in 2025.

Public Perception of Ocasio-Cortez

Ocasio-Cortez is popular among Democrats but receives mixed reactions from the general public. A recent YouGov and The Economist poll indicated 39 percent view her unfavorably, while 33 percent favor her. Among Democrats, 69 percent view her favorably.

The CNN/SSRS poll reflects similar findings with 26 percent holding positive views, 36 percent negative, and 56 percent favorability among Democrats. Ocasio-Cortez represents change for the Democratic Party, garnering support from young, progressive voters. Some anticipate her candidacy for president in 2028.

Addressing this speculation, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted her focus on long-term policy goals like single-payer healthcare and workers’ rights. She remarked that not being fixated on specific positions allows her to affect change more freely.
