NY Primary Elections Reflect Democratic Party’s Future Challenges

New York’s primary elections are seen as a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party’s direction. Prominent Democratic Socialists, including Zohran Mamdani, are vigorously campaigning for progressive challengers. Among the candidates advocating for substantial policy changes are Claire Valdez, Darieliza Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander. Their platforms include Medicare for All and the abolition of ICE.

Claire Valdez, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 7th Congressional District, faced notable criticism after a podcast clip from May resurfaced. She had called for the abolition of TSA PreCheck and the nationalization of the airline industry. “My hot take is we need to abolish PreCheck. I’ve got a million beefs with the airline industry and the process of having to fly. We need to nationalize the airline industry, but let’s start by abolishing PreCheck,” Valdez stated during a May 1 podcast appearance on “Candidate Corner,” part of “The Bitchuation Room.” The clip spread widely after her primary win against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and others.

Former Rep. Marc Molinaro criticized Valdez’s proposals, suggesting they would complicate air travel. “We’ve reached the point where NY socialist Democrats think making airport security worse and lines longer somehow improves America,” Molinaro commented on X. Secure with the expedited screening service, Tré Easton humorously voiced opposition. “You can take my TSA pre-check from my cold, dead, security theater-loving hands,” he remarked.

David J. Bier, director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, voiced concerns about nationalizing industries. He warned that such actions could place them under the control of the current administration. “If we nationalize industries, it means putting Donald Trump in charge. All the flights would be used for deportation, and they wouldn’t fly to Democrats’ states,” Bier highlighted.

Travel writer Gary Leff pointed out that PreCheck allows for efficient use of TSA’s resources by focusing on passengers without prior vetting. Valdez clarified that her aim was not to abolish TSA but rather PreCheck. “PreCheck means using scarce resources to focus on actual threats,” Leff explained.

Valdez framed her proposals as countermeasures to airline profits, passenger fees, and insufficient consumer protections. “The airline industry is making a lot of money, constantly undermining consumer rights, nickel-and-diming us in every single facet,” Valdez said.

She noted that without a robust national rail system, planes are often the only option for long-distance travel within the country. “And so we’re forced into these super uncomfortable seats. We have very few rights,” Valdez added.

TSA describes PreCheck as a program that uses risk assessments prior to passenger arrivals. Since the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the U.S. airline industry has operated under a deregulated framework. Fox News Digital contacted U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy’s office but has yet to receive a response.

Valdez also argues that the absence of an extensive national rail network leaves travelers with limited choices for cross-country trips. Her transportation platform suggests redirecting federal funds from roads toward public transit, walking, and biking. The platform does not include abolishing PreCheck or nationalizing airlines.

Fox News Digital reached out to Valdez for comment but has not received a reply.
