North Carolina Doctor Arrested After Alleged Road Rage Incident on Interstate 77

A physician from North Carolina, Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello, was arrested on August 22 following an alleged road rage incident. The incident involved gunfire directed at a Jeep on Interstate 77, leading to the injury of two sisters aged 12 and 20, according to Virginia State Police.

Dr. Arriviello, 61, from Charlotte, North Carolina, was driving north in a Mercedes-Benz at around 8:50 a.m. when the shooting occurred approximately three miles north of the North Carolina-Virginia state line. A statement from state police indicates that Dr. Arriviello fired shots at the moving Jeep, hitting both sisters in their legs.

“Both victims were airlifted to a hospital with injuries reportedly not life-threatening,” stated the police.

After the incident, Dr. Arriviello fled the scene in his Mercedes-Benz. However, police troopers managed to locate and stop his vehicle about 15 miles away, taking him into custody. Dr. Arriviello is facing multiple felony charges, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, causing bodily harm with intent to maim, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The authorities have detained Arriviello without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail. His court appearance is scheduled for September 29. The police have not disclosed what triggered the road rage incident, nor have they confirmed whether a firearm was recovered from Dr. Arriviello’s vehicle.

The driver of the Jeep, meanwhile, received a citation for reckless driving, though the driver’s identity has not been revealed by the authorities.

Dr. Arriviello has held an emergency medicine physician license in North Carolina since 2010, with no public disciplinary records. He owns Family Urgent Care located in Monroe.
