North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards Sells McDonald’s Franchise and Exits Politics Amid Ethics Concerns

1 hour ago 0

North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards, a Republican, has announced the sale of his McDonald’s restaurant business, marking the end of a decades-long venture. This decision allows him to focus more on his congressional responsibilities for western North Carolina. Edwards and his wife, Teresa, built their McDonald’s franchise over many years.

Edwards also revealed his decision not to seek re-election. He shared his heartfelt message on social media, stating, “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support. God bless WNC and America.” The announcement came at 3:32 a.m. ET.

Two days prior to Edwards’ announcement, a report from the House Ethics Committee recommended his censure. The report highlighted inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers. Despite denying any romantic or sexual intentions, Edwards’ actions included giving lavish gifts and inviting the staffers to private dinners and vacations. These behaviors led to discomfort among the women and fueled rumors in the office.

Edwards had won his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in early 2023, representing North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District. His primary victory was decisive. However, the ethics report disclosed patterns of unprofessional behavior, despite finding no evidence of physical misconduct.

The report criticized Edwards for being unaware or dismissive of how his actions impacted the young women’s careers and well-being. It stated that both women felt uncomfortable and attempted to communicate their unease, but were caught in a difficult position due to Edwards’ authority as their employer.

The House Ethics Committee formally adopted the report’s findings and recommended censure for Edwards. This marks a significant moment in his political career, with ethical questions overshadowing his achievements.
