Nick Reiner Charged with Murder of Parents Rob and Michele Singer Reiner

A Los Angeles County grand jury has charged Nick Reiner, 32, with the murder of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment also alleges that Nick Reiner lay in wait before attacking them. The grand jury, which met in secret, delivered the indictment on July 20. It was unsealed when Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty.

Rob Reiner, a prominent director and actor, along with his wife, a photographer and producer, were found stabbed to death in their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on December 14. Nick Reiner’s arrest occurred within hours, with charges following two days later. This indictment bypasses the preliminary hearing process in California, where evidence is typically presented publicly.

Lying in wait suggests premeditation because the suspect waited or hid to ambush the victims. This allegation, combined with a murder conviction, makes Nick Reiner eligible for the death penalty. However, prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek it.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

While prosecutors have remained silent about possible motives and secrets envelop the case, the unsealed indictment adds few new details. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports, but a court order currently prevents this action. The indictment also mentions the use of a deadly weapon, a knife, as an aggravating factor.

Trust Funds and Legal Representation

As the indictment proceeds, Nick Reiner seeks funds from a trust established by his parents to aid in his defense. Court filings state that the trustees have unjustifiably withheld the funds. The trust contains at least $1.5 million, but exact amounts are not disclosed. Nick Reiner wishes to rehire prominent criminal defense attorney Alan Jackson, who previously represented him. However, due to his siblings’ unwillingness to fund the defense, a public defender currently represents him.

A court hearing on this petition is scheduled for next week. The LA County Public Defender’s Office has declined to comment.

Secret Grand Jury Process

California prosecutors have the option to charge a defendant through a preliminary hearing, where evidence is public, or through a secret grand jury. In this case, a grand jury was used. This approach aligns with precedents in other cases, such as the prosecution of Harvey Weinstein.

Rob Reiner’s Legacy

Rob Reiner’s career began with his role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in “All in the Family,” earning him two Emmy Awards. Posthumously, he received an Emmy nomination for his guest role in “The Bear.” His directing credits include iconic films like “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally…”, where he met Michele Singer.

The couple married and had three children, including Nick Reiner, who co-wrote “Being Charlie” with his father, a film reflecting on his teenage struggles. Nick’s brother, Jake Reiner, recently described the family’s experience as a nightmare.
